A new venue for the first contest of the
2003 series - thanks to Tim Mabin and the Taupo club for letting us use their
field, located within a horse racing track. This is the same field that was used
for the SoarChamps several years back and provides plenty of room for setting up
the course and winches. Unfortunately low cloud and light drizzle greeted us on
Saturday morning, however this eventually cleared and allowed the contest to
start mid-morning. CD David James did a great job and everyone pitched in which
allowed us to complete 2 rounds despite the late start. Conditions were tricky
with light, variable winds and the lift generally weak and hard to find.
Round 3 was completed around midday
Sunday, however after lunch the wind finally picked up - in the wrong
direction... with time a bit short to change winches and in the interests of
model preservation, the contest was declared finished at 3 completed rounds.
Best speed time was 19.04 seconds by
Chris Kaiser, best distance 23 legs by Dave Larsen.
