Fifteen pilots entered Round 5 of the F3B series with entries from
Auckland, Wellington, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay and Palmerston North. It was
great to have new flyer, Rob a "new Kiwi" from Gisborne. Rob flew a Caracho
in his first F3B and thoroughly enjoyed himself and steadily improved during
the weekend.
Saturday was fairly cold all day with the temp ranging from 5 to 10
degrees during the day. Forecast was for a breezy Northwesterly and the high
cloud indicated the same but early conditions at ground level had us setting
up with a light downwind breeze. During the first round duration task the
breeze slowly swung to the forecast direction. Patchy thermal conditions saw
a range of times recorded. Distance and speed were "average" with round 1
scores typically better than the afternoons round 2 scores. Best scores for
Saturday was a 18.86 sec speed run for Peter Williams, Chris Kaiser & Craig
Dawson with 20 laps in distance and a perfect 10/100 for Kevin Botherway in
duration.
Saturday evening had the majority of the flyers eat out at the SteakOut.
The usual camaraderie, banter and bullshit flowed. Another good night had by
all. The weather at this point was not looking good for Sunday.
The morning was a different story. Clear skies, no wind and about 13
degrees, however the forecast was for a strong northwesterly. It must have
been warmer as it was long before Kev had cut the legs off his jeans.
Duration once again was a mixed bag of scores. As soon as duration finished,
a light breeze settled in straight down the winch lines. Round 3 & 4
distance & speed tasks followed before the competition was called off due to
strong wind. All task scores counted as we had completed 2 full rounds. Best
scores for Sunday was a 17.09 sec speed run by Craig Dawson, Daff Niles with
24 laps in distance and a perfect 10/100 for Aneil Patel in duration. Kevin
Botherway posted 2 sub 18 speed runs at 17.81 & 17.89 sec.
Congratulations to Peter Williams -1st place. He was followed by Kevin
Botherway & Aneil Patel.
